When I first started this blog, I tried to check the Akismet Spam page of the dashboard regularly. That meant that I was able to recover any false positives and restore them to the posts in question. Akismet is very accurate, but there have been a few times that genuine comments nearly got lost.
Well, it’s all got too much. I’m getting a huge amount of spam caught by Akismet now, and I don’t have the time to go through all of it.
So, if you leave a comment and it doesn’t appear immediately, drop me a line asap and I’ll pull it out of the spam filter before it gets too far down the list. I don’t have any moderation or captchas on my blog, so chances are that Akismet incorrectly swiped it.
Incidentally, if it was one of the 1144 items in my Akismet list this morning, it’s lost already: I nuked it.
I’ve found that the amount of false positives (ham incorrectly marked as spam) is basically zero with Akismet, which is the way you want things to be. A few false negatives pop up, but that’s inevitable. They seem to have the balance pretty well set though, which is lucky as it doesn’t seem to be configurable.
By the way, you don’t need to nuke the list, as it’s auto-nuked after a certain number of days (unless you are running extremely low on storage space).
Having the same problem.. ;0 The false positives have really gotten to be quite frequent and there is a LOT of spam as wel.
Ahh! You left a comment on my blog and it came up in Askimet. I tried to demark it but then it disappeared! 🙁
I blog through MovableType and its built in comment spam seems to be pretty reliable.. unfortunately out of the 100-200 spam comments a day about 10 get through to be moderated (the rest being zapped).. it can be a pain to have to junk the moderated ones after a trip of a few days.. 🙁
